Greece sweep Mexico in straight sets

 

Thessaloniki, Greece, June 19, 2015 - Greece achieved a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 30-28) victory over Mexico led by Rafail Koumentakis who finished with 15 points scored.

The beginning of the first set saw an even game until an unstoppable hit from Mitar Tzourits put Greece two points ahead at 12-10. Mexico managed to close the gap at 12-12 but soon the hosts took the command and registered an eight point rally which left Mexico 22-14 behind. It was Dimitris Tzourits who spiked to mark a 25-16 win in Greece's favour.

In the second set the home side quickly raced off to a 9-5 lead which allowed them to control the game. Mexico found no way to stop their opposition led by Rafail Koumentakis and gifted them the set 25-18 on an own service error from Pedro Rangel.

In set three both battled back and forth with neither country leading by more two a points until Mexico took a 12-9 lead after an ace produced by Pedro Rangel. Greece coach called his team off court to give new instructions but it was only enough to reduce the deficit to one point at the second technical timeout. Some 3000 fans witnessed then a real battle. When Rafail Koumentakis put Greece 24-23 it seemed like the game is over but his subsequent serve missed the target and the home side needed another six points to finish the set 30-28.
