Serbia and Italy prepare fifth encounter in 2015 World League

 

Head-to-head

·    Serbia (including Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro) and Italy have gone head-to-head 28 times in the World League. Serbia have won 16 times, Italy 12.
·    This will be their fifth World League meeting this season. Serbia have won three (including the last two) and Italy have won one. None of these matches ended in a straight set victory.
·    In their most recent match on 28 June, Serbia's Aleksandar Atanasijevic scored a total of 32 points (30 spikes, one block and one serve). No player has scored more points in a single match in the 2015 World League.
·    Italy's Giulio Sabbi scored 29 points in that match on 28 June, most for an Italian player in a single match in this World League season.

Serbia

·    Serbia are in the World League Final round for the first time since 2010. That year, they claimed the bronze medal by beating Cuba 3-2 in the final for third place.
·    Serbia (including its predecessors) have amassed seven medals at the World League (four silver, three bronze) but are yet to win the tournament.
·    Serbia's last match ended in a 3-2 loss to Australia, ending a five-match winning streak.
·    Aleksandar Atanasijevic is Serbia's top scorer this tournament with 130 points (120 from spikes).

Italy

·    Italy have reached the World League Final Round for the third year in a row. In both 2013 and 2014 they finished third.  
·    They have won the World League on eight occasions, one shy from Brazil's record nine gold medals. Italy are eying their first gold medal in the competition since 2000.
·    Italy have finished on the podium 15 times of their 25 previous participations (G8-S3-B4). Only Brazil have more silverware (18, G9-S5-B4).
·    They have won and lost six of their 12 matches this season and suffered a four-match losing streak before beating Brazil 3-2 in their most recent match on 3 July.
·    Filippo Lanza is Italy's top scorer with 122 points.
