World League Week 5 preview - Pool H

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 9, 2015 - Venezuela will make their FIVB Volleyball World League comeback this year after a six-year absence in the competition.

Pool H: Country specific statistics
Egypt

· Egypt will participate in their fifth World League and for the first time since 2010.
· Their best result is a 13th place in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In their only other participation, 2010, they finished in 14th place.
· Egypt have won only one of their last 11 matches in the World League. That only win was their latest match in the World League against Finland, a straight sets win.
· Egypt's oldest player is twice the age of Egypt's youngest player taking part in the 2015 World League. Ashraf Abouelhassan is 40 years old and Ahmed Shafik 20 years old.

Venezuela
· Venezuela will partake in their seventh World League and their first since 2009.
· Venezuela's best result is a seventh place in 2005. There worst was in their last participation (16).
· They have lost their last 11 World League matches and were defeated in straight sets in their last four.

Spain
· Spain will partake in their 13th World League. They returned last year after an absence of five years.
· Their best result is a fifth place, which they claimed in 1999, 2002 and 2003. Their worst result came in last year's World League when they came 25th.
· The last four World League matches in which Spain played, ended in five sets. Two were won by Spain and two by the opposition.

Kazakhstan
· Kazakhstan is one of two teams making their debut in the World League alongside Montenegro.
· Kazakhstan will be hosting the first week of Pool H in Taraz.
· Last year's debutants Belgium, Mexico, Slovakia, Tunisia and Turkey all won at least one match on home soil.

Pool H: Head-to-head
Kazakhstan v Venezuela (June 12)
· These teams have never met in the World League as Kazakhstan are making their debut.
· Venezuela have played eight matches against AVC sides in the World League. They lost the first three but won the last five.
· This will be Kazakhstan's first ever World League match. In the history of the tournament, 11 teams have won their first meeting. Last year, Belgium, Slovakia and Mexico won their first matches as debutants.

Spain v Egypt (June 12)
· These teams have never met in the World League. In fact, Spain have never met any CAVB sides in the World League.
· Egypt have won only three of their 24 confrontations with EVC sides in the World League. They won their last confrontation in the World League with an EVC side, winning in straight sets against Finland.
· Spain have lost their opening matches in their last two participations. In 2008 they lost in straight sets against Bulgaria and in 2014 they lost 3-1 against Slovakia.

Spain v Venezuela (June 13)

· These teams have met eight times in the World League. Spain have won six of these matches, Venezuela only two.
· All eight meetings came in 2002 (4) and 2003 (4), with Venezuela winning two of the last three. Their only loss in the last three encounters came in a five set match.
· Spain have lost their last four matches against CSV sides. Venezuela have lost the last seven against EVC sides.

Kazakhstan v Egypt (June 13)
· Kazakhstan and Egypt have never met in the World League as Kazakhstan are making their debut.
· Egypt have won only one of their last six matches against AVC sides. They defeated China in straight sets in their last World League match against an AVC side in 2008.
· Only once teams representing Asia have failed to win a single set against Egypt in the World League.

Venezuela v Egypt (June 14)
· Venezuela and Egypt have never met in the World League.
· This will be the first ever World League meeting between a CSV side and a CAVB side.
· The CAVB have lost every first match against another federation. All first matches against another federation were played by Egypt.

Kazakhstan v Spain (June 14)
· This will be the first World League meeting between Spain and debutants Kazakhstan.
· These teams have met at the 2002 World Championship. Spain won the encounter by 3-1.
· Last year, Spain played two World League matches against AVC countries, losing them both (3-0, 3-2).
