Overview

Team profile

The Montenegro team are competing in the World League for the first time since the country's independence in 2006 when they entered as Serbia and Montenegro. They are the lowest-ranked side in this year's tournament in joint-86th place, but they will take heart from their 2014 campaign during which they were crowned champions of the European League. In what was their first gold medal in a major international competition they won their pool with six wins from eight, defeated Macedonia at the semifinal stage and beat Greece in a two-legged final.

The win qualified Montenegro for this year's World League and they will rely on the likes of European League MVP Milos Culafic to push them on this season as they look to make an impact on the top stage. It was just their second appearance in the European League and they did not participate at the 2014 World Championship. Competing as Serbia and Montenegro from 2003 to 2006, they finished second at the 2003 and 2005 World Leagues, equal-fifth at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and fourth at the 2006 World Championship. The team's head coach is Serbian Slobodan Boskan, the 39-year-old from Novi Sad who played in the Yugoslavia team which won the gold medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
