Kooy steer Netherlands’ 3-2 win against Finland

 

Netherlands recovered in the fourth set and continued with a 3-2 win over Finland in Pool E of the FIVB Volleyball World League

Espoo, Finland, June 27, 2015 – Dick Kooy scored crucial points that helped Netherlands endure Finland in the tiebreaker (25-18, 20-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13) in Pool E of the FIVB Volleyball World League at the Barona Areena on Saturday.

Kooy finished with 24 points built on 21 kills, two blocks and an ace, while Finland’s Urpo Sivula also had 24 points.

Netherlands reigned in the first set 25-18, as their attackers outscored the Finns with 16-11. Finland showed a much-improved performance by recovering and taking the next two sets 25-20 and 25-18, respectively.

Netherlands bounced back in the fourth set 25-18 as Kooy closely trailed Sivula in scoring with 19 points. Kooy continued with his scoring spree as he started with two kills, but Finland equalised at 5-all in the nail-biting tiebreaker. 

The succeeding plays became a race and a scoring showdown between Sivula and Kooy. The top scoring Dutchman prevailed as he made a crucial point to lift his team by two points 12-10. Elviss Krastins came up with a clutch hit to tie the score at 13-all but Netherlands powered their way to secure set and match 15-13.
