Finns claim first victory in World League Pool E

Finland celebrates scoring a point against Portugal

Vaasa, Finland, June 5, 2015 - Week 4 of the 2015 edition of the FIVB Volleyball World League opened with a victory for Tuomas Sammelvuo's Finland against Pool E rivals Portugal 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-22) at the Vaasa Ice Hall.

The Finns lost to Belgium in five sets twice in Week 2, before again losing away to the Belgians twice last week. Their first win in this year's competition comes against a Portuguese team which lost its first two Pool E matches against the Netherlands.

Sammelvuo's men began the match well, rapidly building to a 6-2 advantage and holding on to the lead throughout the first set. The second set again saw Finland ahead, until Portugal were able to equal scores at 19-19. Their comeback, however, did not stop the Finns from claiming the second set and again taking control of set three.

Olli-Pekka Ojansivu and Urpo Sivula led the scoring for Finland, both with 11 points, while Portugal's Hugo Gaspar scored a match-high 12. The two teams meet again on Saturday at 15.40 GMT.
