Cuba hoping to avoid yet another straight set defeat

 

Head-to-head
· These teams will meet for the 10th and 11th time in the World League. Cuba have won six of the previous nine meetings.
· Canada beat Cuba in three of their last four World League meetings, including two straight set wins in this year's edition.
· Gavin Schmitt scored 36 points for Canada in these two meetings combined, the only Canadian player with 20+ points scored. Rolando Cepeda Abreu (23) and Osmany Santiago Uriarte Mestre (23) both scored 20+ points for Cuba.
· Canada also beat Cuba at the 2014 world championships, a five-set win.

Cuba
· Cuba have won only two of their eight World League matches so far this season, winning a total of eight sets. Their only two wins came against Argentina.
· They have already lost four matches in straight sets this season, equalling their record for most straight set defeats in a single World League edition. In 2013, 2011, 2003 and 1994 they also lost four matches without winning a set.
· Cuba have won only two of their last 11 World League matches played in Havana: a win against Argentina in 2015 and a win against Russia in 2013.
· Rolando Cepeda Abreu has scored 135 points for Cuba in this World League campaign, second-highest of all players behind only Belgium's Sam Deroo (147). Canada's Gavin Schmitt has also scored 135 points

Canada
· Canada are coming of a 3-1 win against Bulgaria. They won their first three matches of their 2015 World League campaign but have failed to claim consecutive wins in their five matches since.
· They have lost their last five five-set matches (two in 2014, three in 2015). These five losses follow a streak of four consecutive wins in five-setters.
· Canada have won five matches so far this season. They only won more in 2013 (9), 2014 and 1992 (both 6).
· Gavin Schmitt is the competition's second-best spiker (117), only trailing Belgium's Sam Deroo (128).
