Canada and Netherlands win two-from-two to open World League 2015

Canada celebrate winning a point

Calgary, Canada, May 17, 2015 - Canada beat Cuba in straight sets for the second night in a row to remain perfect in Pool C, while in Matosinhos, Portugal, the hosts made Netherlands fight all the way in the 3-2 (17-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 25-12) Netherlands win, leaving Netherlands first in Pool E with five points and Portugal second with one point.
In Calgary, Gavin Schmitt was again the star leading all scorers for the second successive evening, this time with 19 points, as Canada beat Cuba 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-21).

Gordon Perrin scored 12 points for Canada and says things are building well for them.

“It’s good to get two 3-0 wins because that’s not what usually happens in the first leg of World League - usually you split because both teams are a little rusty. But we escaped with two big wins and it’s starting to come together,” Perrin said.

After going down 3-1 on the opening night of the 2015 FIVB World League, Portugal again won the opening set against Netherlands but couldn’t hold on to win. Dick Kooy scored 25 points for Netherlands and leads the scoring for the 2015 World League with 39 points after two matches.
