Serbia claim Pool A victory against Italy

Serbia celebrate their victory against Italy

Novi Sad, Serbia, June 26, 2015 - Serbia took on Italy in FIVB Volleyball World League Pool A tonight, with Nemanja Petric and Aleksandar Atanasijevic both scoring 16 points to lead the hosts to victory 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 25-27, 25-21).

Serbia and Italy had each won one of their two previous World League encounters this season. Serbia won 3-1 in Italy, but the Azzurri also claimed a 3-2 home win. Both teams are playing to qualify for the Group 1 Finals in Rio de Janeiro.

The hosts started well, claiming the first two sets with a few points to spare. Giulio Sabbi, Filippo Lanza and Ivan Zaytsev led the visitors' challenge, which was rewarded when coach Mauro Berruto's men stepped up to claim the third set.

Italy's joy, however, was short lived, as Serbia rapidly took the lead in set four to move towards victory, with Nikola Kovacevic particularly precious for the home team.
