Puerto Rico win first 2015 World League match with 3-1 over Tunisia

Puerto Rico were able to stop Tunisia today

Istanbul, Turkey, June 21, 2015 - Puerto Rico ended their Pool F campaign on a high thanks to a 3-1 (29-27, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19) win over Tunisia on Sunday. The result allows Puerto Rico to claim third spot in the table with Tunisia finishing last.

Puerto Rico lost all five of their previous World League matches this year and were determined to end the unfortunate streak today. They got off to a strong start with 8-5 at the first technical time-out. Later on in the set, they were able to build a four-point lead before five unanswered points from Tunisia put the African side in front, 19-18. In a tight finish to the set Tunisia squandered two set points before commiting two simple errors to hand Puerto Rico the opener, 29-27.

Puerto Rico's good form continued in the second set as they raced off to an 8-3 lead. Fantastic serving from Ortiz coupled with consistent attack from Soto and Rivera allowed their team to control the rest of the set and win it quickly, 25-16. The third set saw both teams neck to neck until the second technical time-out, when Tunisia finally found their rhythm in attack and won five points in a row to go 22-15 up. A quick kill from Agrebi finished the set with 25-18 for the African side.

The fourth set began with neither team able to break away before great blocking helped Puerto Rico snatch a 13-10 lead. A clever serve from Goas let them extend their advantage to five points at the second technical time-out. At the end of the set it was Jean Carlos Ortiz who led Puerto Rico to a comfortable 25-19 victory. Ortiz was today's top scorer with 21 points, including 7 aces.
