Bulgaria upset Cuba in four-set clash in Havana

Danail Milushev soars on an attack during their match against Cuba in Pool C of the FIVB Volleyball World League

Havana, Cuba, June 5, 2015 – The visiting Bulgarian side defeated hosts Cuba 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23) in Pool C of the FIVB Volleyball World League at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum on Friday.

Nikolay Penchev and Todor Skrimov led Bulgaria to victory with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Cuban captain Rolando Abreu Cepeda topped all scorers with 26 points on a losing effort.

The young Cuban squad struggled against a more poised and experienced Bulgarian team, which got 14 points out from their net defence, as the Cuban attackers could not drill in this wall to gain advantage.

The visiting side claimed the first two sets but the home team were able to avoid the sweep when they recovered from the deficit at the end of the set. In the fourth set, Cepeda and Javier Jimenez teamed up to improve the Cuban plays and came very close for an upset to extend the match to a tiebreaker. The Bulgarians, on the other hand, kept their composure to secure the set and match victory.
