Overview

Team profile

Finland finished joint-eighth in Group 2 of the 2014 World League after winning six matches and losing six in Pool C. They defeated pool winners Belgium on three occasions but were nine points short of qualification. This year they are pooled again with Belgium as well as the Netherlands and Portugal in what will be their 10th successive appearance. Their best performance to date was in 2007 when they took seventh place. Finland ended a 32-year absence from the World Championship last year and returned in emphatic fashion. Thousands of fans travelled to Poland to cheer on their team as they enjoyed a spirited run to the second round before eventually finishing joint-ninth. In 2013 they finished eighth in the 16-team European Championship, repeating their feat of two years earlier to underline their consistency at continental level.

The Finns' greatest success to date was their fourth-place finish at the 2007 European Championship in Russia. They have been regulars in the final round of the European Championship, competing 15 times overall and finishing in the top 10 on six occasions. They have taken part in the World Championship seven times and they also won silver in the 2005 European League.
