World League review - Group 1

 

USA's 12 blocks helped them win 3-1 against Iran

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 1, 2015 - Defending champions USA started their FIVB Volleyball World League Group 1 campaign with two wins against Iran.

Pool A: Australia - Italy (May 29 and 30) 
• Australia failed to record their first win over Italy in the FIVB Volleyball World League after two four-set defeats. They have now lost all seven meetings with Italy in the competition.
• Australia did, however, win their first two sets against Italy in the World League after losing the first five encounters in straight sets.
• Australia have now started all three of their World League campaigns, 1999, 2014 and 2015, with two defeats.
• Italy have started a World League campaign with two victories for the sixth consecutive time (2010-2015).

Pool A: Brazil - Serbia (May 29 and 31)
• Brazil have won both of their meetings with Serbia after a 3-2 win on 29 May and a 3-1 in on 31 May. 
• Seven of the last eight World League meetings between Brazil and Serbia have now ended in five sets.
• It was for the first time since 2008 Serbia lost the first two matches of a single World League campaign.
• In the second match, a 3-1 win for Brazil, Serbia outspiked the Brazilians 50 to 43 with two players reaching double figures in points from spikes: Uros Kovacevic (14) and Marko Ivovic (13).

Pool B: Poland - Russia (May 28 and 29)
• Poland beat Russia twice in Week 3 of the World League, a 3-0 win on 28 May and a 3-2 win on 29 May.
• After losing 10 of their first 11 World League matches against Russia, Poland have now won five of their last eight against them.
• Three of Poland's six World League wins over Russia have now come in five sets.
• Russia have lost the opening two matches in two consecutive World League campaigns (2014-2015) for the first time in history.
• Bartosz Kurek led the scoring for Poland with 15 points in the first match and 23 points in the second.

Pool B: United States - Iran (May 28 and 29)
• USA are still unbeaten against Iran in the World League after adding two wins this weekend to their semifinal win in 2014.
• USA's 12 blocks against Iran's four in the second match this weekend helped them secure a 3-1 win.
• Defending champions USA have won their last five World League matches.
•USA have won 11 of their last 13 home matches, only losing to Bulgaria, in 2013 and 2014.
• Iran have now lost four matches in a row in the World League, their equal longest losing run after a streak of four in 2013-2014.
