World and Olympic champions to clash in Group 1 opener

Poland and Russia in action at the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Poland 2014

Gdansk, Poland, May 27, 2015 - Elite FIVB Volleyball World League Group 1 will kick off on Thursday with an encounter between world champions Poland and Olympic champions Russia at the Ergo Arena in Gdansk.

The Polish players have arrived in the capital city of Pomerania to prepare for the clash with neighbours Russia. World League Pool B features Poland and Russia, Iran and the United States.

The matches in Gdansk will take place on Thursday and Friday at 20.15 local time. Tickets for these fantastic matches are still available via www.ebilet.pl.

Russia are the current Olympic title holders, while Poland are the reigning champions of the world. During last year’s FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Poland 2014, played at six cities across the country, the white-and-red team defeated their Russian rivals in a thrilling five-setter to advance to the semifinals. Before that, Stéphane Antiga’s men had won an equally challenging five set battle against Brazil. Russia had to settle for fifth place in the final standings.

In the history of all 17 Polish-Russian World League clashes, the white-and-reds of Poland have recorded four victories. Coach Andrei Voronkov’s players are no strangers to the Ergo Arena in Gdansk, which set the scene for Poland's first round matches in last year’s World Championship.

The two other Pool B teams - USA and Iran - will also play matches this weekend, on May 30 and 31. In Group 1 Pool A, Brazil will take on Serbia and Australia will play Italy.
