USA triumph in straight-set match over Russia

 

USA celebrate their 3-0 victory to claim double wins over Russia in Long Beach at the FIVB Volleyball World League

Long Beach, USA, June 6, 2015 – USA got double victories over Russia after they succeeded 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-16) in Pool B of the FIVB Volleyball World League at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday.

Matthew Anderson tallied 14 points from 12 attacks, one block and one service ace, to lead the United States in their second victory on Russia in their home turf. Aaron Russell and Murphy Troy helped out Anderson with 10 points apiece.

Russia, on the other hand, struggled to get their scorers going, with only Pavel Moroz managing to score in double figures. Moroz finished with 12 points, while Dmitriy Ilinykh only scored seven points.

Russia had a total of 12 blocks over the United States’ seven but the latter were more efficient in other skill categories.

USA were challenged in the end game of the first set as Russia saved two match points. USA still prevailed as David Smith connected on a spike from the middle to secure the opener 25-23.

In the second set, USA reached another set point at 24-20 when Christenson served the ball out of bounds. Fortunately, David Smith ended the set again with a spike from the middle 25-21 to put USA up ahead 2-0.

USA started their run in the third set after the second technical timeout. USA cruised with a comfortable lead as the Russians failed to convert on their attack attempts and sustain their runs. USA closed the set and match 25-16 from an off the block spike by Russell.
