Australia brace for big showdown with Brazil in Sydney

Australia defend their home court against top team Brazil on June 27 and 28 in the FIVB Volleyball World League in Sydney.

Sydney, Australia, June 23, 2015 – One of the biggest months in Australian volleyball history will kick off this week, when the world’s best volleyball team, Brazil, take on Australia’s Volleyroos in Sydney in the FIVB Volleyball World League at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on June 27 and 28.

“We are excited to be welcoming the international volleyball series to Sydney Olympic Park, which is set to provide spectators with a fantastic performance as Brazil take on Australia’s Volleyroos,” NSW Minister of Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres, said.

“The NSW Government is proud to have secured this major sporting event for Sydney through our tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, and I wish both teams the best of luck this weekend.”

The arrival of the Brazilians in Sydney will certainly be a highlight on Australia’s volleyball history.

The last time the South Americans were in Australia was at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, when they finished sixth overall.

The Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic silver medallists command a huge crowd wherever they play, and ticket sales for the June 27 and 28 matches have been in-demand, giving Australian volleyball fans another chance to see their team compete in top group of the World League.

Electro dance group, The Potbelleez, will add to the excitement of the event with a live performance on both days.

The Australian men’s team is not the only side that is making waves in the sport, the Australian women’s indoor team will also be competing in the prestigious FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix for the second time, kicking off their campaign in Taldykurgan, Kazakhstan, with the host team, Cuba and Algeria.

Meanwhile, on the sand, Australia’s best four beach volleyball pairs will compete in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Netherlands 2015.

Australia’s top ranked women’s combination of Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy will enter the event in their best form, with three recent top ten World Tour results and a bronze medal in Porec, Croatia, while FIVB U23 world champions Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Nikki Laird, will surely make their presence felt.

Australian men’s pair Isaac Kapa and Chris McHugh will look to recapture their form that saw them win World Tour bronze in Germany last year. Their second men’s combination Damien Schumann and Joshua Court have been one of the most improved teams in the local circuit and are keen to prove themselves as strong Olympic qualification prospects.
